Robert Mann String Quartet Institute, N.Y. 4-8 January 2017

January 12, 2017

We are just back from New York, having participated in the Robert Mann String Quartet Institute at the Manhattan School of Music. Robert Mann, who is now in his mid 90s, was the founder and first violinist of the Juilliard Quartet for 51 years! Sadly for us, he no longer gives public seminars, instead his distinguished colleagues provided us with a multitude of inspiring master classes. During 4 days we had coaching sessions and master classes from David Geber (American Quartet), Mark Steinberg (Brentano Quartet), Nicholas Mann (Mendelssohn Quartet), Wolfram Koessel (American Quartet), Samuel Rhodes (Juilliard Quartet), Peter Winograd (American Quartet) and Kazuhide Isomura (Tokyo Quartet).

The TREITLER quartet had been selected from string quartets all over the world to participate in the Robert Mann institute. We were in extremely good company together with quartets such as the Kamila Quartet, Omer Quartet, Vera Quartet and the Verona Quartet. All the quartets played at an exceptional standard and the atmosphere was supportive and engaged throughout the week.

On the fifth day the seminar culminated in a chamber music concert where all five participating string quartets performed. It goes without saying that these 5 days were some of the most intense and inspiring in the life of the TREITLER quartet as of yet!
